Raymond M. Brake, 94, of Mount Pleasant, IA, passed away Thursday, December 8, 2016, at Arbor Court in Mount Pleasant.Visitation will be held from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, December 15, 2016, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Following the visitation, funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., at the Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Raymond Brake officiating. Burial, with military rites by the Henry County Honor Guard, will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Arbor Court for their activity fund. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born on June 7, 1922, in Franklin County, MO, Raymond Maynord was the son of George Washington and Nellie Ethyl (Lohman) Brake. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1939, where he was an MP and competed in military sports by boxing to represent his company. In 1944, Staff Sergeant Brake was discharged in California. Following his discharge, he was a policeman in Portland, OR, for several years. On June 16, 1956, Raymond married Norma L. Dean in Des Moines, Iowa. She preceded him in death on September 1, 2015. Raymond's mother died when he was seven years old, and his father died five years later. Because of this loss, Raymond learned the necessity for hard work at a very young age. He was artistic and used his talent as a sign painter. For several years, Raymond was a Purolater Carrier. Music consumed his life, and he enjoyed it throughout his life. He was especially fond of old time country music and liked to play his harmonica at Salem Old Settlers. Survivors include six children, Raymond (Karen) Brake of Appleton, WI, Gary (Mel) Brake of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Ragena Sanchez of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Harley (Trisha) Brake of Mt. Union, Larry (Connie) Brake of North Port, FL, and Dennis Brake of Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Along with his wife, Norma, Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, two grandchildren, five brothers, and five sisters.
