Raymond C. Schlabach was born November 13, 1923 near Kalona, Iowa, the son of Noah and Bertha (Miller) Schlabach. He served in CPS in Terry, Montana, Liverpool, California, and then in Poland. On November 24, 1949 he was united in marriage to Barbara D. Schlabaugh at the Fairview Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Raymond has lived and farmed in the Kalona community all of his life. He was a member of the East Union Mennonite Church. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Raymond died on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 89 years. Raymond is survived by his wife Barbara of Kalona; three daughters Linda (Chris) Tones of Kalona; Lou (Jerry) Miller of Wellman; Kathy Schlabach of Iowa City; two grandsons Shane Miller of Portland, Oregon; Brett Miller of Iowa City; two step granddaughters Melissa (Mike) Vogel of Des Moines; Caitlin Tones of Davenport; a step grandson Nick Tones of Fort Collins, Colorado; two sisters Leona Schlabach of Kalona; Susie Yoder Hostetler of Kalona; and a brother Perry Schlabach of Jefferson, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Barbara and Bertha; and two brothers John and Isiah. Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Jay Miiller will officiate. A Graveside Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 PM on Monday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for East Union Mennonite Church and the Pleasantview Home.
