Ray "Jim" M. Smith was born September 22, 1939, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Harley Ray and Agnes Katherine (Brogard) Smith. He graduated from Kalona High School in 1958. On August 12, 1989, he married Bonnie L Scurr in Iowa City. They lived in the North Liberty area before moving to Millersburg, where they have resided for the last 20 years. Jim farmed and raised horses before retiring in 2002. He enjoyed gambling, farming, going to many horse sales, auctions, flea markets and spending time with his family and friends. Jim died on Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, at the age of 72 years. He is survived by his wife Bonnie of Millersburg; his children Jimmie Smith of Des Moines, Carmen McShane of Bondurant and 4 other children; 11 grandchildren; and a sister Anna Mae Bissell of Hiawatha. He was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration of Life Service will be held 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 18, 2012, at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. Chaplin Rebecca Carver will officiate. Burial will be in the Millersburg Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 11:00 AM until service time. A general memorial fund has been established.
