Marengo- Ralph Henry Schaefer, was born on July 28, 1917, in rural Iowa Township, Iowa County, Iowa, a son of William J. and Frieda Anna (Sandersfeld) Schaefer. He was baptized on September 2, 1917, and confirmed on April 5, 1931, at St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead. He attended St. John's Parochial School. He was united in marriage to Esther Teggatz on August 20, 1940, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Williamsburg. They have lived in Sumner Township since 1941. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Where he has served as an elder, trustee and was a member of the fellowship club. He enjoyed traveling, dancing and attending his grandchildren's activities. Ralph died on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness, at the age of 91 years, 2 months and 2 days. He is survived by his wife Esther of 68 years; 2 daughters: Pat (Larry) Dellamuth of Williamsburg; Connie (Chris) Slater of Iowa City; a son: Ken (Jolene) Schaefer of Marengo; 8 grandchildren: Mike (Sandy) Dellamuth, Dave (Joi) Dellamuth, Michelle (Mike) Piersol, Nick (Ann) Schaefer, Angie (Jason) Iburg, Jennifer (Brandon) Simpson, Melissa Slater and Lauren Slater; 10 great grandchildren; a brother: Vic Schaefer of Williamsburg and a sister: Alice Bier of Fresno, California. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother: Hilbert Schaefer; a sister-in-law: Myrta Schaefer; and a brother-in-law: Bob Bier. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Friday, October 3, 2008, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 8:00 PM on Thursday, October 2, 2008, at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
