Phyllis L. McMains, age 86, of Malcom, passed away Friday, November 18, 2022, at Iowa River Hospice, Marshalltown. Funeral service: 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn, with Rev. Rick Magstadt officiating. Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Kloster Funeral Home, Brooklyn. Interment will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Malcom. Memorials may be contributed to the Malcom Cemetery Association, Iowa River Hospice, in Marshalltown or Grace Community Church, in Grinnell.

Phyllis is survived by her children, Keith McMains, of Malcom, Barb (Layton) Miller, of Prairie City, Sharon (David) Ingram, of Marshalltown and Ken (Cindy) McMains, of Malcom; seven grandchildren, Adrianna (Monte) Metz, of Newton, Matthew Ingram (Kathryn Davidson), of Franklin, TN, Joel Ingram, of Davenport, Ian Ingram (Amy Kidd), of Palm Bay, FL, Lance Ingram, of Marshalltown, DeAnn (Kevin) Wilford, of Cedar Rapids and Marcus McMains (Brianna Townsend), of Newhall; four great-grandchildren, Jayden McMains, Sadie Booth, Paisley Stonehocker and Konnor Wilford; two sisters, Marilyn Elscott, of Kansas City and Ruth Zear, of Oskaloosa. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Richard in 2001.

Phyllis LaVonne Visser, was born April 23, 1936, in Lacey, the daughter of John and Alice (Arkema) Visser. She played basketball while attending Lacey High School and graduated in 1954. Following high school, Phyllis was employed at Woolworth in Oskaloosa. Phyllis married Richard McMains, March 16, 1957, in Oskaloosa and made their home in Ewart in 1959. They moved to their present farm northeast of Malcom in 1964. Phyllis and Richard both worked in janitorial services at GTE, at Farm Services and the Poweshiek County Fairgrounds together. She also worked at James’ Greenhouses, in Grinnell and at the Malzuma Inn and supplied eggs for the restaurant. Phyllis was a member of Grace Community Church, in Grinnell. She enjoyed spending time outside in the garden, tending to the chickens and later canning what was produced in their garden. Phyllis also enjoyed sewing and quilting, baking, and watching soap operas on T.V.
