KEOTA-Peter J. "Stibe" Flander, Jr., age 89, of Keota, died Monday, January 12, 2015, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Stibe was born August 19, 1925, in Keota, to Peter and Elizabeth (Redlinger) Flander and graduated from Keota High School. He served in the Army during World War II. On August 18, 1951, he married Karyl Cater at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. Stibe worked as a Main Operator at Natural Gas Pipeline in Harper for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council. He was also a member of Keota VFW #4716, where he assisted with many military funeral rites, was president of the St. Mary's P.T.A. and Lagos Acres Country Club and worked with Boy Scouts of America. Stibe enjoyed woodworking, stamp and coin collecting, fishing, golf, traveling, bird watching and chicken on Fridays.
Survivors include three children: Chris (Jane) Flander of Oskaloosa, Melody (Ron) Bombei of Keota and Pete (Sharen) Flander of Louisburg, Kansas; ten grandchildren: Andy Flander, Grant and Alex Flander, Neil, Rex and Danielle Bombei, Amanda and Kyle Flander, Shana Ryan and Katie Danders; 13 great grandchildren and daughter-in-law: Nadine Flander of Sidney, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Karyl in 2013; son: Mark Flander; one brother: Bernard Flander and three sisters: Francine Romine, Martha England and Mary Henry.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Revs. Jacob Greiner and Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Mary Cemetery in Keota, with military rites by Keota VFW Post #4716. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the church, where there will be a wake service at 4:00 p.m. and a time of sharing at 7:00 p.m.
A memorial fund has been established for the Keota Veterans Memorial, Wilson Memorial Library or the American Diabetes Association. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Stibe and his family. Tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
