Peg Swenson

Margaret L. Peg Swenson, 97, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018, at Henry County Health Center, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, April 12, 2018, at Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, with Rev. Mark Youngquist officiating. The family will greet friends at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m., until the time of the service. Burial will be in the Swedesburg Cemetery. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church. Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant is assisting the family with arrangements. Born south of Swedesburg, on August 1, 1920, Margaret Louise was the daughter of William Frederick and Minnie Fredrika (Carlson) ODean. She attended Round Prairie Country School and was a 1937 graduate of Fairfield High School in Fairfield, IA. On July 28, 1945, Peg married Dale Swenson at the Lockridge Augustana Lutheran Church. He preceded her in death on October 2, 1992. Peg then married Richard Van Tuyl on April 18, 1998 at the First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death on April 25, 2003.

Peg began her career in education by teaching at Vega School, in the rural Round Prairie area, and then at Crawfordsville, IA. She took several years off to raise her family before returning to education. Peg completed her Bachelor of Arts degree from Iowa Wesleyan College while teaching in the Mt. Pleasant School District. She taught fifth grade for many years at Lincoln and Van Allen before retiring in 1983.

A longtime member of Swedesburg Evangelical Lutheran Church, Peg was an active member in the various church organizations. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, family was Pegs highest priority. She spoiled them with her wonderful cooking and baking. Peg was a member of P.E.O. Chapter NZ, T.T.T. Founders Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma, Retired Teachers Organization, and The Wednesday Club. She was a supporter of Iowa Wesleyan College, enjoyed trips abroad to Sweden and England, and was very proud of her Swedish heritage.

Sharing in Pegs life included three daughters, Linda (Tim) Proctor of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Beth Swenson of Ames, IA, and Janie (Alice Davitt) Swenson of Northbrook, IL; three grandchildren, Matt (Wendy) Proctor, Sara (Travis) Kremer, and Ted (Eliza) Proctor; six great-grandchildren, Brody and Caitlin Proctor, Jaxton and Brynn Kremer, and Harper and Tatum Proctor; and a brother-in-law, Ned Ratekin.

Along with her husbands, Peg was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruth Ratekin, and Lucille Aronson; and a brother-in-law, Mahlon Aronson.
