WASHINGTON-Pauline Ellen Crooks, age 86, of Washington, formerly of Harper, died Saturday, November 22, 2008, at the Washington Care Center in Washington, following a long battle with cancer. Pauline was born June 8, 1922, in Commerce, Iowa, the daughter of Latta and Lanora (Bertrand) Acheson. She attended St. Elizabeth elementary school and graduated from Sigourney High School and Parsons College in Fairfield with a degree in teaching. On May 27, 1944, Pauline married Cloyce I. Crooks at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. Pauline taught in on one room elementary school in Harper and Talleyrand. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, the Altar and Rosary Society in Harper the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Y Women. Pauline enjoyed quilting, gardening, bird watching, genealogy, the Cubs and her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include three sons: Bryan Crooks and fiancee Pam Brackin of Washington, Iowa, Gene Crooks and wife Diane of Des Moines and Todd Crooks and wife Jeanette of Seattle, Washington; one daughter: Bonita Crooks of Des Moines and nine grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Cloyce in 1990; three brothers and six sisters. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, November 28, 2008, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a wake service at 4:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
