SIGOURNEY-Paul Robert Smeaton, age 77, of rural Sigourney, died Saturday, January 6, 2007, near Sigourney, the result of an automobile accident. Paul was born January 18, 1929, in Keokuk County, Iowa, to Ferdinand and Lottie (Brotherson) Smeaton and attended Johnson country school. He did carpentry in Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas before returning to Sigourney in 1954. Paul owned and operated Smeaton's Shoe Shop in the 1950's and worked at Keoco Auction for several years, in addition to his carpentry. He also raised cattle and chickens. Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing and craft work. Survivors include two maternal aunts: Twila Strand of Longmont, Colorado and Betty Heisdorffer of Sigourney. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 9, 2007, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 8, 2007, at the funeral chapel. A memorial fund has been established for the What Cheer Fire Department or the Sigourney Fire Department. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
