Patty Jo Miller was born February 10, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa the daughter of James and Margaret (Hollingsworth) Newman. She graduated from Kinross High School in 1952. On April 15, 1956 she was united in marriage to Robert Dean (Cobb) Miller at the Brethren Church in South English, Iowa. Patty has lived most of her life in the Wellman Community. She babysat in her home for over 10 years and then worked as the head cook at Mid-Prairie High School from 1976 - 1994. Patty enjoyed life; her passions were baking pies and cinnamon rolls, country line dancing, fishing with Pa, and spending time with her family. She was very proud of her grandkids and thoroughly enjoyed following their activities. She was co-owner of Scoot - A - Boot Productions with Ben and George, a member of First Baptist Church, American Legion Auxiliary and Iowa City Dancers. Patty never met a stranger; she was "Grandma Patty" to all who knew and loved her. Patty died Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa following a courageous battle with lung cancer. Patty is survived by her husband Dean (Cobb) Miller of Wellman. She is also survived by her 5 children and their families. Jeffrey Miller (Teresa Crosser) of Riverside, Julie Gingerich (Lee) of Wellman, Joni Yoder ( John H.) of Wellman, James (Jake) Miller (Mindy) of Washington, and Jill Kinnaird (Curt) of Tiffin; 9 grandchildren- Amber (Kelsey Price) and Cole Kempf of Wellman, Shane and Spencer Miller of Iowa City, Austin and Kaitlyn Yoder of Wellman, Jami Miller of Washington, and Lexi and Abbi Kinnaird of Tiffin; 3 great-grandsons- Hunter, Drake, and Zion Price of Wellman; 2 brothers- James Newman (Carolyn) of Mt. Vernon, Tim Newman (Kathy) of North English; 5 sisters- E. Rae Culp (Jerry) of Mesa, Arizona, Maggie Barkdoll (Don) of Phoenix, Arizona, Dixie Knipfer (Glenn) of North English, Georgia Jones (Loren) of McGregor, and Terri Killian of St. Louis, Missouri; 2 brothers-in-law- E. Duane Miller of Washington, Bill Miller (Karyl) of Washington; a sister-in-law- Sharleen Freel of Wellman, and many Nieces and Nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her mother and father in-law Melvin and Marjorie Miller of Wellman. a sister Jacqueline Naze of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Don and JoAnn Miller of Iowa City and brother-in-law Wes Freel of Wellman.
A memorial fund has been established for the First Baptist Church and the American Cancer Society.
