Patricia "Pat" Shaffner

Patricia J. "Pat" Shaffner, 74, of West Burlington, IA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 1, 2017, in West Burlington. Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Friday, August 4, 2017, at Olson~Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening. A second visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church the next day. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, August 5, 2017, at West Avenue Baptist Church, 2500 West Avenue, Burlington, IA, with Pastor Bob Norris officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery of Mt. Pleasant. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to West Avenue Baptist Church or Salem Congregational Church. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born on January 16, 1943, in Mt. Pleasant, Patricia Joan was the daughter of Melvin Cornelius and Marye Eleanor Montgomery Smith. She attended school in Salem, IA. Pat continued her education in Mt. Pleasant and was a 1961 graduate. On February 3, 1960, she married John Fredrick Shaffner at Salem Congregational Church. Pat lived in the Salem area prior to moving to West Burlington in the late 1980s. For over 30 years, Pat worked at Champion Sparkplug as a production worker. Following her retirement in 1992, she began a second career in retail sales working for Montgomery Ward, Fashion Bug, and Christopher Banks until the time of her death. Pat was a member of West Avenue Baptist Church and Salem Congregational Church. She actively participated in The Red-Hot Flashes of The Red Hat Society and Menopause Mommas, originally a group of five close friends. Known to her family as a shopper extraordinaire, she loved finding a bargain. She collected Hot Wheels and gnomes. Those sharing in Pat's life include two daughters, Nancy (Mick) Sones of Andover, MN and Carmen Shaffner of Richmond, VA; one son, John (Elaine) Shaffner, Jr. of Salem, IA; three grandsons, Elton Shaffner, Dylan Anderson, and Taylor Alliman; and a cousin, Sue Agnew of Billings, MT.
