Wellman-Patricia Kay “Pat” Karnes was born July 12, 1945 in Kinross, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis Edward and Wilma Jean (Morrow) Hohenshell. She graduated from Mid-Prairie High School 1963, then attended a secretary school in Cedar Rapids. Pat was united in marriage to Harry Lee Karnes on December 28, 1963, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Iowa City. Pat has worked at Country Lane Eggs, Oral-B and the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics retiring after 27 years. She enjoyed camping, being outside, country western dancing, watching the Chicago Cubs and the Iowa Hawkeyes and spending time with her family. Pat passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2022 at her home at the age of 77 years.
She is survived by her husband Harry; three sons, Rick Karnes (Cindy Huffman) of Iowa City, Brian Karnes (Cathy Nietiedt) of Hannibal, Missouri Kent Karnes (Katie) of Richmond; a daughter, Crystal McFarland (Rick Adamire) of Chiefland, Florida; seven grandchildren, Kelsey Slay (Jeromy) of Kalona, Kendall Smith (Emily) of Coralville, Taylor Albright (Drew) of Kalona, Austin McFarland of Burlington, Billie Jo McFarland of Indiana, Koby Karnes of Richmond and Kyla Karnes of Richmond; eight great grandchildren, Ethan, Myles, Avery and Jackson Slay, Dax and Zayne Smith, Lakota and Cheyenne Albright; a sister, Connie Messer (Lain) of Washington and a brother, Larry Hohenshell (Linda) of Ankeny. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, October 22, 2022 at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. The Family request that Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs attire be worn. A lunch will be served after the service at St. Joseph Catholic Church basement. A Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 Friday, October 21, 2022 at Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Powell Funeral Home in Wellman is caring for the family and services. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations to be sent to Mid-Prairie Foundation, Wellman Fire Department or Volunteer Ambulance Service.
