Homestead-Otto A. Thompson was born June 26, 1915 in Elburn, Illinois, the son of Christian W. And Christine (Olsen) Thompson. He attended rural school in Illinois and Mississippi. Otto served for the United States Army during WWII from 1941 to 1945 as a Staff Sergeant for Company K Fourth Infantry. Otto was united in marriage to Uretta L. Spalding on June 10, 1944 at Fort Benning, Georgia. The couple lived in Ridgeland, Mississippi until 1966, when they moved to the farm near Homestead, Iowa. He enjoyed farming, horses and gardening. He was a former member of the Moose Lodge. Otto died Friday, July 27, 2007 at Colonial Manor in Amana after an extended illness at the age of 92 years. Otto is survived by two sons: Joe and wife Deb Thompson of Homestead and Mike Thompson of Williamsburg; two daughters: Cynthia and husband Ken Van Zee of Iowa City and Rose and husband Delmar Bayer of Victor; 11 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and a nephew: Bill Thompson of Florida. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife in 1992, a brother: Amos Thompson and a granddaughter: Candace. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2007 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the Oxford Cemetery with military rites. Visitation will be Sunday fro 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the funeral home. Memorial are for St. John Lutheran Church or Essence of Life Hospice.
