HOMESTEAD- Orville Adolph Wichmann, of Williamsburg formerly of Homestead, was born on February 24, 1921, near Homestead, Iowa, a son of John & Mathilda (Burgin) Wichmann Sr.. On March 8, 1942, he was united in marriage to Lillian Adella Huedepohl, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in York Township. After they were married they lived on the farm near Homestead for 63 years, until moving to Williamsburg in 2005. He was a life long farmer. Orville served as a Sergeant in the European Theater, in the US Army during WWII from 1942 - 1946. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served as chairman of the congregation, trustee, elder, cemetery sexton and was in the church choir. He served on the LIS board, the ASCS board and was a member of Farm Bureau. He enjoyed talking about his experiences in WWII. Orville died on Monday, September 22, 2008, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a brief illness, at the age of 87 years, 6 months and 29 days. He is survived by 6 children- Carol (Mark) Nissen, Allen (Peggy) Wichmann all of Des Moines, Patricia (Bob) Lillis of Williamsburg, Mary (Bob) Hudson of Fairfax and Connie (Steve) Schmuecker of Cedar Rapids, and David (Barb) Wichmann of Homestead; 12 grandchildren- Brandi (Josh) Knopfel, Tyler Nissen, Brian (Monica) Lillis, Shelly (Ryan) Modracek, Marcy (Kurt) Weber, Jason (Julie) Lillis, Eric Hudson, Rachel Lillis, Katy Wichmann, Alissa Schmuecker, Andy Wichmann and Austin Schmuecker; 3 great grandsons- Owen Lillis, Rob Lillis and Evan Knopfel; and a sister-in-law Joanne Huedepohl of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lillian on August 18, 2008; his siblings- Adolph (Anna) Wichmann, Elsie (Rudolph) Hagen, Chris (Esther) Wichmann, Jack (Helen) Wichmann, Amanda (Art) Pundt, Rose (Bill) Wolter, Henry (Mabel) Wichmann, Minnie (Arnold) Werling, Martin (Jo) Wichmann and an infant Otto Wichmann. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 am on Friday, September 26, 2008, at St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead. Pastor Wayne Woolery will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery with Military Rites. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
