Oral "Shorty" Ulin was born March 22, 1916 in Wellman, Iowa the son of James and Harriet (Wilkerson) Ulin. He attended school in Ottumwa and Wellman. He served in the Army during WWII on the Burma Road. On September 15, 1950 he was united in marriage to Susie Hochstetler in Centerville. Shorty has lived most all of his life in the Wellman community where he worked for Maple Crest, worked road construction around the state of Iowa, and worked for the University of Iowa for 13 years before retiring in 1980. He enjoyed gardening, being with his family especially his grandchildren, and visiting with anyone. Shorty died on Tuesday, July 26, 2005 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 89 years. Shorty is survived by his son - Douglas Ulin and wife Cathy of Wellman; a grandson - Zach Ulin of Iowa City; a granddaughter - Alizabeth Ulin of Wellman; and a brother - William Ulin of Savannah, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Susie in March of 2000; 3 sisters - Maxine Allen, Lenora Aggson, infant Mayme Ulin; 2 brothers - James Ulin, infant Donald Ulin; a half brother - Harold Augustine; and a half sister - Dorothy Howard.
