Opal Frances Popham

North English- Opal Frances Popham was born October 12, 1923, in Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Henry Everet and Hazel Esther (Harris) Denison. She attended North English High School. On April 9, 1943, Opal was united in marriage to Daryl Gene Popham in Kahoka, Missouri. In their earlier married years she and Daryl rode horses and went on trail rides and they loved going to the Dog and Gun Auction in Rutledge, Missouri. Opal was a Homemaker for many years and later worked at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Housekeeping, retiring in November of 1985. Opal was a member of the North English Methodist Church and UMW. In her later years she enjoyed embroidering and crocheting. She enjoyed helping out friends by mending and sewing for them. She always loved spending time with her family. After she moved into Assisted Living and then into the Care Center, she loved playing bingo and the games. Opal died on Tuesday, September 3, 2024 at English Valley Care Center in North English at the age of 100 years. 


She is survived by her children, Linda Vikel of Iowa City, Ronald (Helen) Popham of Tiffin, and Brent Popham of Kalona; 8 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren; and a sister LaDonna Vitt of Paris, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father Ralph Ruby; her husband Daryl in 1997; a son Donald Popham; a granddaughter Tami Davidson; a grandson Tracy Vikel; and a great granddaughter Alexa Sheeder.


Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 am on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will follow in the Champion Hill Cemetery, rural North English. Visitation will be from 10:00 - 11:00 am on Thursday. Memorials may be given to the English Valleys Care Center. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
