Opal Marie Fisher was born September 19, 1923 in rural Watkins, Iowa, the daughter of Perry and Rose (Leise) Light. She graduated from Norway High School in 1941. On June 22, 1948 she was united in marriage to John L. Fisher at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway, Iowa. They lived and farmed in the Wellman community for 60 years. Opal was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church, and Altar and Rosary. She was a wonderful cook and loved to dance. Opal died on Friday, June 28, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 89 years. Opal is survived by five children - Mary Kay Lowenberg of Huntsville, Missouri; Donna Fisher of San Antonio, Texas; Mark Fisher of San Diego, California; Robert Fisher of Wellman; Diane Christensen of Coralville; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother Franklin Light of Marion, and a sister Patricia Soukup of Longmont, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, and two brothers Dennis and George Light. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Wellman with Rev Troy Richmond officiating. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman where a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. A General Memorial Fund has been established.
