HARPER-Omar Conkity, age 79, of Harper, died Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Omar was born May 12, 1929, in Harper, Iowa, to Frank and Rose Elizabeth (Bohr) Conkity. He graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in Harper and served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. On July 3, 1954 he married Marie Hladik in Spokane, Washington. Following Omar's discharge the couple moved to Chariton, Iowa, where Omar ran a gas station. They then moved to Truman, Minnesota for a few years before returning to Harper in 1960. Omar hauled bulk milk for several years, ran a shop and convenience store in Harper for several years and drove for Ahrens Construction. On August 12, 1977, he married Betty Jane Hammes at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in rural Harper. Omar was a member of the V.F.W. and enjoyed cooking, making sausage and fishing. Survivors include his wife: Betty Conkity of Harper; son: Wayne (Shirley) Conkity of Harper; two daughters: Christine (Kent) Bouslog of South English and Rosemary (Doug) Flynn of Keota; six step children: Linda (Dan) Anderson of Warsaw, Illinois, Larry (Deb) Hammes of Kansas City, Missouri, Mary Jane Hammes of Glenwood, Jack (Deb) Hammes of Richland, Becky (Chuck) Lacey of Wahoo, Nebraska and Mike (Sonja) Hammes of Washington; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and sister: Mary Ruplinger of Iowa City. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Marie in 1975, brother: Wayne Conkity and step-son: Craig Hammes. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, with Rev. Charles Fladung officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2009, at the funeral home. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is caring for Omar and his family.
