Norman E. Lofting, 74, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, formerly of Salem, OR, passed into eternity on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, IA.According to his wishes, Norm has been cremated. The family will host friends at Calvary Baptist Church on Friday, August 5, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. There will be no funeral service. A memorial has been established in his name and may be given to the family. Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel has assisted the family and on-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Born June 19, 1942, in Salem, OR, Norman Eugene was the son of Frederick and Florence Bond Lofting, of Monmouth, OR. In the early 70s, he married Cynthia Fox. The couple later divorced. On February 14, 1976, he married Bonnie Marie Bare in Salem, OR.Norm attended school in Independence, OR before joining the U.S. Navy in 1960, serving on active duty until 1962. He then joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and served until retiring in 1985, a total of 25 years of service to his country.After leaving active duty, Norm studied data processing and, eventually, began a long-running career as a payroll technician for the State of Oregon Adult and Family Services and then for the Oregon Military Department. At the time of his retirement in 1995, he moved his family to his wife's hometown of Mt. Pleasant, IA.Of the Christian faith, Norm was known for his willingness to talk to anyone, and regularly shared his experiences from his former time in the military. He liked traveling, particularly to Honolulu, Hawaii, the location of one of his former duty stations. Norm enjoyed photography, especially taking pictures of his grandchildren, along with being a movie buff in his spare time. Along with his wife, Bonnie of 40 years, Norm is also survived by; two daughters, Sherri Carlson of Sherman, TX and Kimberly (Adam) Forquer of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one son, Jeffrey (Jordan) Lofting, residing in Zama, Japan; two brothers, James (Sarah) Lofting and Richard (Judy) Lofting, both of Oregon; a sister-in-law, Pat Lofting of Oregon; and five grandchildren, Jessie, Gracie, Lucas, Emilia, and Darcy.Norm was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Edward Lofting and William Lofting.
