Amana- Norma Anna Katherine Schmidt was born April 19, 1914 in Iowa township, Iowa County, near Homestead, Iowa, the daughter of Carl and Meta Huedepohl Walter. She was baptized May 17, 1914 and confirmed on April 1, 1928 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She attended county school and Immanuel Lutheran School. Norma was united in marriage to Arthur Henry Schmidt on September 12, 1935 at the Immanuel Church parsonage. She became a member of Trinity Lutheran Church at the time of her marriage. The couple farmed west of Conroy until 1995 when they moved to the Lake View Village Assisted Living in Amana. Her husband died November 18, 1995. In December 2003, she moved into the Colonial Manor in Amana. Norma enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. Her fingers were never idle she sewed, embroidered and in later years crocheted Afghans for her daughters and grandchildren. Norma died Sunday, May 8, 2005 at the Colonial Manor in Amana after a extended illness at the age of 91 years and 19 days. Survivors are two daughter: Janet (Jerry) Jenson of Arvada, Colorado and Eunice (Jack) Goodwin of Lawrenceville, Georgia; four grandchildren: Kirk Jenson of Denver, Colorado, Kristin Jenson of Arvada, Colorado, Amy (Gayelord) Langley of Decatur, Georgia and Libby (Tracey) Miller of Fayetteville, Georgia; four great grandchildren: Sarah and Nathan Langley and Micah and Emerson Miller; two brothers: Orville (Rita) Walter of Homestead and Reno Walter of Oxford and a sister: Lillie (Laverne) Neitzel of Brooklyn; two sister-in-laws: La Verne Walter of Oxford and Lois Wallace of Williamsburg. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, four brothers: Arnold, LeRoy, Adolph and Melvin Walter and a sister: Erna and husband Harold Collingwood and a sister-in-law Juanita Walter. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2005 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. Pastor Gary Sears will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 P.M. Wednesday at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
