Mrs. Nona Slabach was born January 11, 1916, in Kokomo, Indiana, the daughter of Harvey J. and Fannie Helmuth Miller. She attended rural schools in Indiana. On February 17, 1938, she was united in marriage to Edwin Slabach in Kokomo, Indiana. They moved to the Kalona area in 1951. Nona and Edwin have enjoyed winters in Sarasota, Florida since 1950. She was a charter member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church, and attended Palm Grove Mennonite Church while in Florida. Nona was a devoted and loving wife and mother, and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid quilter and gardener, enjoyed playing games, bird-watching and reading. Nona died May 19, 2007, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa at the age of 91 years following a sudden illness. Nona is survived by her husband Edwin of Kalona; 7 children - Herman and wife Sonya of Kalona; Elsie Lewis of Cleveland, Ohio; Freeman of Sarasota, FL.; Lloyd and wife Karen of Sarasota, FL.; David and wife Beverly of Kalona; Norma of Sarasota,FL.; Kathy Bender and husband David of Sarasota FL.; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister Ida Lane of Peoria, Illinois, and a brother Henry Miller of Kokomo, Indiana. Nona was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers Ezra, Levi, Perry, Monroe, and Harvey; and a great-grandson. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 23, 2007 at the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church in Kalona. Pastor's John King, Floyd Helmuth and David L. Yoder will officiate. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will be present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church Mission Program.
