Nellie Magdalena Christner was born May 14, 1929 in Falkenstein, Poland the daughter of Rudolf and Christine (Schweitzer) Bachmann. She immigrated to the United States in 1949 where she made her home in the Kalona community. On June 28, 1953 she was united in marriage to John L. Christner at the East Union Mennonite Church near Kalona. They lived and farmed in the Kalona community until moving to Washington in October 2002. She was a member of the Marion Avenue Baptist Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She enjoyed cooking, spending time with grandchildren and working in her flower gardens. Nellie died from complications of a heart attack on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 78 years. Nellie is survived by her husband John of Washington; a son Steven Christner and wife Sally of Turner, Maine; 2 daughters - Joyce Anglea and husband Terry of Bourbonnais, Illinois; Heidi Cranston and husband Brad of Burlington; 18 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a brother Art Bachmann and wife Fern of Kalona; and a sister Matilda Kennel and husband Norman of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A memorial fund has been established for the Marion Avenue Baptsit Church.
