E. Neal Frary, 72, of Salem, IA, passed away Saturday, January 30, 2016, at the Manor Care in Davenport, IA.Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2016, beginning after 12 noon, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, February 5, 2016, at the Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, with the Reverend Joseph Phung officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Henry County Honor Guard. Cremation will follow the service. Burial will be at a later date at Salem East Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Simkin Pidgeon American Legion Post 94, St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and the Henry County Relay for Life. On-line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com. Edward Neal Frary, known to family and friends as Neal, was born December 9, 1943, to Bob and Esther Waldmeier Frary of Salem, IA. He was born the second of six children and attended grade school near Salem at Jackson Township country school while helping his father with the family farm. Neal graduated from Mount Pleasant Community High School in 1962. He then attended Iowa Wesleyan College where he graduated with a degree in business administration in 1967. Paying his own tuition, Neal worked at OConner clothing store and H. Eugene Construction in Mt. Pleasant. He was the first in his family to get a college degree. In December 1967, Neal was drafted by the United States Army and after a brief training at Ft. Dix New Jersey, departed for Vietnam where he proudly served from March of 1968, to March of 1969, as a Specialist E-5 in the 199th Light Infantry Brigade . After leaving the service Neal was hired by ARCO Chemical in Ft. Madison, IA as a credit manager. On July 4, 1970, Neal married Sue Ann Schulte of Houghton, IA. After various jobs in finance around the Midwest he and Sue built a new home near the Frary family farm in 1979 and raised two children. Neal began a long career in banking with Hawkeye Bank Trust as Branch Manager where he assisted farm customers through the 1980s farm crisis. He was part of the formation of Valley Savings Bank in Mt. Pleasant and served on their board as vice president. He then retired from banking in 2009, after his final 10 years with Farmers Merchants Bank, serving as their bank president.An active member of the community, Neal enjoyed membership for many years in the Mt. Pleasant Kiwanis Club and Salem American Legion. An avid outdoorsman, he spent much of his free time hunting, fishing and riding horses. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, the National Turkey Federation, and Pheasants Forever. He loved travel in his retirement and spending time with family and friends. Along with his loving wife, Sue, of 45 years, Neal is survived by a daughter, Paula (Colin) Woods of Davenport, IA; a son, Bob (Holly) Frary of Salem, IA; three brothers, John (Lisa) Frary of Sugarland, TX, Tom (Cindy) Frary of Mt. Pleasant, IA, and Jim Frary of Salem, IA; a sister, Sara (Mike) Miller of Lake Brownwood, TX; and a brother-in-law, Jim Hashbarger of Camdenton, MO. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Avery Woods, Sam Frary, and Charlie Frary.Neal was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Martha Harshbarger.
