Williamsburg- Naomi Franey was born September 1, 1921, in Columbia, South Carolina. The daughter of Ollan and Addie Boney Hatchell. She graduated from Blythewood High School in South Carolina. She married Dr. Keith Dougherty and of that union they had 3 children: Linda, Mike and Van, they were later divorced. On April 13, 1974, she married Joseph E. Franey Jr. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She was a sales associate at Armstrong's Department Store for 17 years, retiring in 1987. They lived in Cedar Rapids until moving to Highland Ridge Retirement Community in August of 2008. Naomi was a former member of the Eastern Star and the Elk Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking, golfing, playing bridge, bowling and attending Hawkeye Football games. Naomi died on Tuesday, June 28, 2011, at the Highland Ridge Care Center, Williamsburg at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her husband Joe of Williamsburg; 2 daughters Linda (Bob) Driscoll of Williamsburg and Patti (Steve) Smith of Johnston, Iowa; 2 sons: Mike (Gaye) Dougherty of Okoboji, Iowa and Van Dougherty of Iowa City, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; a sister Margaret Register; and 2 brothers: Richard Hatchell and Tom Hatchell. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 sisters Lannie, Alma and Dina; and 3 brothers: Bill, Jimmy and Herb. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Thursday, June 30, 2011, at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Williamsburg. Pastor Kirk Statler will officiate. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-7 PM at Powell Funeral Home. Memorials are for Camp Courageous.
