Kalona-Myrtle Ione Gingerich was born January 17, 1933 in Elkhart, Kansas, the daughter of James and Gertrude (Warner) Hamilton. She graduated from Goshen College receiving her Bachelors Degree in Education and the University of Iowa with a Masters Degree in Home Economics. Myrtle was a teacher at I.M.S., Hesston College, Adam's State in Colorado, Visalia California High School and George Fox College in Portland, OR. Myrtle was united in marriage to Clayton Earl Gingerich on December 25, 1971 in La Junta, Colorado. The couple lived in Colorado until 1985 when they moved to Arkansas and then later in 2006 they came to Kalona. She was a member of the La Junta Mennonite Church, serving on the Fellowship Committee and was a Welcome Hostess to new comers to La Junta communities. Myrtle also enjoyed doing Macrame. Myrtle died Friday, April 13, 2007 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after an extended illness at the age of 74 years. She is survived by her husband Clayton of Kalona; sister: Ruth Hamilton of Mountain Home, AR.; five step children: Dr. Karen Gingerich of Kansas City, MO, Dr. Karla Gingerich of Ft. Collins, CO., Tom Gingerich of Reno, NV., Sharon (Ron) Hawkins of Laramie, WY., and Ron Gingerich of Lanai, Hawaii; three step grandchildren and five step great grandchildren. Myrtle was preceded in death by her parents and a brother: James Hamilton. Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be 1:00p.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Kalona. Rev. David L. Yoder will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until service time on Tuesday. Burial will be at a later date in the La Junta Cemetery, La Junta, Colorado.
