Myrlin S. "Pete" Strausser was born on June 9, 1915 in Millersburg, IA the son of Christopher and Mary L. Cheney Strausser. He grew up and attended school in Millersburg. Myrlin found work as young man in Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago. He eventually ended up in Ames, Iowa where he met Wilda Seeger. They were married on Thanksgiving Day, 1941.Soon after, Myrlin joined the US Army and served in the Pacific during World War II and later in the Korean War. After the war they settled in North English in 1945. He purchased and operated the family house moving business fulltime or parttime for nearly 30 years. In 1965 he took a job as a nursing assistant at the VA Medical Center in Iowa City and retired in 1980. Myrlin proudly earned his GED from Kirkwood Community College in his 50's. He was an active member of the North English Christian Church and a former member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. After his retirement he enjoyed woodworking, making items for his family and friends. He also enjoyed raising flowers and sharing them and their seeds with the people he met. Myrlin died following a brief illness at the English Valley Care Center in North English on Saturday, January 31, 2009. He lived 93 years, 7 months and 22 days. He is survived by daughter Lynn (David) Hickman of Aurelia, IA; son Lanny (Ann) of Waterloo; grandchildren Jeanette Cornforth, Jon Hickman, Sara Strausser, Adam Strausser, Erin Strausser and three great grandchildren: Aimee Hickman, Tyler Cornforth and Chloe Hickman. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Wilda in December 2002, grandson Joel Hickman; 4 sisters: Violet Smith, Betty Ward, Lorane Colon and Lola Hindman; 8 brothers: William, Dean, Donald, Gerald, George, Kenneth, Clarence and Richard Strausser. A Celebration of His Life will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at the North English Christian Church with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, February 2, 2009 from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM.
