Louis Miles Nesbitt, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, IA died Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Henry County Health Center. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert David officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials have been established to the American Cancer Society. Born October 15, 1923, in Mt. Pleasant, IA, Miles was the son of Orval L. and Alma Fricke Nesbitt. He married D'Anne Kohl on September 7, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, IA. She preceded him in death on December 6, 1998. Miles was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. Entering the Navy in 1942, Miles served in the Pacific Theater during World War II and then in the Naval Reserve for a total of twenty two years retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Iowa. Miles owned and operated Nesbitt's Electric, Inc. As a lifelong resident of Mt. Pleasant, Miles gave of himself to his community. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Chamber of Commerce, Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club, Henry County Development Corporation, and served as president of the Mt. Pleasant School Board. For over 40 years, Miles has worked with the American Cancer Society including serving on the Iowa Division Board for over 30 years. He has received many awards, among them the highest award given by the ACS, the Harold W. Morgan Award in 2001. He was an avid traveler and loved visiting his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed camping, fishing and boating. Mr. Nesbitt is survived by three daughters, Docie (Larry) McCormick of Boalsburg, PA, Pam (John) Merkle of Wayzata, MN, and Amy Nesbitt of Chicago, IL; three sons, Jeff (Scotti Rawlings) Nesbitt of Graham, NC, Jon (Joanne Redfield) Nesbitt of Bridgewater, NJ; and Mark (Mary Roose) Nesbitt of Eden Prairie, MN; eleven grandchildren, David McCormick, Scott Cormency, Matt McCormick, Alex Merkle, Jeff Merkle, Jill Merkle, Brett Nesbitt, Kate Larkins, Tom Nesbitt, Nick Nesbitt, and Meredith Nesbitt; nine great-grandchildren, Miles and Grant McCormick, Zola Cormency, Kayleigh and Mackenzie McCormick, Hannah Nesbitt, Dana Strickland and Lauryn and Brody Larkins; two nieces Sara Tapscott and Sheila Tapscott; and one nephew, Steve Tapscott. He is also survived by a special friend, Janet Wolin of Mt. Pleasant, IA. Along with his wife, Miles was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons, Teo McCormick and Tim McCormick; and one sister Mary Jean Tapscott.
