Mildred O'Connor Christner was born July 11, 1926 near Holbrook, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Erma (Fisher) Kauffman. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1946. She has lived in the Wellman, Kalona and Iowa City communities. She worked in housekeeping at the University of Iowa in Courier Hall, and then in the warehouse at Moore Business Forms where she worked for 29 years retiring in 1991. Mildred was married to Francis O'Connor, and later married Joe Christner in 2001. Mildred was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. She enjoyed quilting, bowling and collecting stamps. Mildred died on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 87 years. Mildred is survived by her husband Joe Christner of Iowa City; 3 step sons; Merle Christner of Cedar Rapids, Ted Christner of Iowa City, and Curtis Christner of Warner/Robins, Georgia; 5 step daughters; Nancy Shannon of Iowa City, Kaylene Christner of Weaverville, California, Glenda Demrist of Jacksonville, Florida, Renee VanHoe of Marengo, and Patricia O'Connor of Marion; a brother Don (Wanda) Kauffman of Ida Grove; 2 nephews; Jeff Kauffman of Wisconsin, and Craig Kauffman of Kansas. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Francis O'Connor; a step daughter Charlotte; and a brother Cearl Ellis Kauffman. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, January 2, 2014 at First Mennonite Church in Iowa City. Visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until service time on Thursday. A memorial fund has been established for the First Mennonite Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona is in charge of the arrangements.
