Amana-Mervin Henry Arthur Von Ahsen was born May 17, 1925 near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Otto and Anna (Huedepohl) Von Ahsen. He attended Immanuel Parochial School near Williamsburg. Mervin served in WWII from 1944 to 1946 in which he received 2 bronze stars. Mervin was united in marriage to Darlene Schmidt on October 6, 1946 at St. John's Lutheran Church near Homestead. Together the couple lived and farmed near Williamsburg until retiring and moved to Amana in 1981. Mervin also worked at Amana Refrigeration from 1969 to 1988. Mervin was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797 of Williamsburg. He enjoyed fishing playing cards and watching Cubs Baseball. Mervin died Sunday, January 6, 2008 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after an extended illness at the age of 82 years. Mervin is survived by his wife Darlene of Amana; three daughters: Connie Mekus of Des Moines, Sheryl Boughton of Williamsburg and Paulette Bates of Watauga, Texas; a son: Neal Von Ahsen of Des Moines; five grandchildren: Rachael Hanson, Brian Fetzer, Amy Evans, Jody Von Ahsen and Travis Von Ahsen; seven great grandchildren; a brother: Eldon Von Ahsen of Newhall; two sisters: Laverna Oakes of Hemet, California and Lorena Joseph of Columbus, Nebraska. He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter-in-law: Bonnie Von Ahsen. Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 am on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Pastor Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 at the Uhlmann-Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Where there will be a VFW Service at 6:30pm. Memorials are for the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Lutheran Interparish School or Iowa City Hospice.
