Merlin Edwin Gibson, age 92, formerly of Keota, IA, died on Wednesday, December 22, 2004, at his home at Highland Ridge Retirement Community in Williamsburg, IA, following a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM Friday, December 24, 2004 at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Pastor Beth Miller and Dr. A.J. Gibson will officiate. A private family burial at the church cemetery will precede the memorial service. Friends may call Thursday, December 23rd from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Survivors include his wife, Ellen Pickeral of Williamsburg; a daughter Muriel Zimmerman of Maryville, MO; a son, Duane (Marilyn) Gibson of Mission, TX; a stepdaughter Joyce (Chris) Hampsher of Cedar Rapids, IA; a brother, Ivan Gibson of Williamsburg, IA; 4 grandchildren: Angela Zimmerman, Greg Zimmerman; A.J. Gibson, and Kela Goins; 2 step grandchildren: Josh Hampsher, Bekah McHenry, and Rachel Hampsher; and 4 great grandchildren. Merlin was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Lois, a son, Ronald Dale Gibson and a sister-in-law, Mary Gibson. Merlin Edwin Gibson was born on May 8, 1912, in South English, IA, the son of Calvin and Minnie (Brower) Gibson. He graduated from Kinross High School. Merlin was united in marriage to Lois Elizabeth Jasper on December 15, 1937 in South English. She preceded him in death on May 8, 1990. Merlin married Ellen Pickeral on August 17, 1991 in at his home near Keota. Merlin was a life long farmer who loved gardening and the outdoors. He was an active member of the English River Church of the Brethren and served on a variety of church committees. He also had served on the Kinross School Board. In lieu of flowers, the Merlin Gibson Memorial Fund will be distributed between Iowa City Hospice, English River Church of the Brethren, and International Evangel Heralds (Duane Gibson's ministry work).
