Melvin Roy Hopp was born on June 16, 1930, near South Amana, Iowa, the son of Carl W. & Bertha R. (Newkirk) Hopp. He attended St. John's Parochial School, Homestead. He served in the United States Army from 1951-1953, serving in the Signal Corp. On March 4, 1956, Melvin married Joan Hanke in Waukon, Iowa. He was a life long farmer in the Homestead area, specializing in dairy farming. He took great pride in having a Century Farm. Melvin was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Homestead, where he served as a church trustee for 2 terms and was also a member of the Marengo American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, dancing, roller skating, music (he could even yodel) and spending time with his family. Melvin died on September 6, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his wife Joan of Homestead; 5 children: Gary M. ( Carol) Hopp of West Amana, Terry (Steve) Hegewald of Keota, Kim (Chuck) Brockmann of Long Grove, Gregg Hopp of Victor and Derek Hopp of Williamsburg; and 7 grandchildren: Nathan & Crystal Hopp, Brittany & Matthew Petz, Avery Hopp and Aaron & Amber Gerard. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers: Gilbert Hopp and Willard Hopp. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:30 AM on Monday, September 10, 2012 at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Homestead. Rev. Terry Small will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, with military rites by the Marengo American Legion. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3:00- 7:00 PM at the Powell Funeral Home, Williamsburg. A memorial fund has been established for St. Luke's Hospice and St. John's Lutheran Church, Homestead.
