SIGOURNEY-Maxine Hammes, age 83, of Sigourney, died Friday, November 9, 2007, at her home, following a brief illness. Maxine was born March 19, 1924, in Lafayette Township, Keokuk County, to John and Mildred (Wade) Miller and graduated from St. Elizabeth's High School in Harper. Maxine worked at the W.A. Sheafer Pen Company in Fort Madison prior to her marriage to Herbert N. Hammes. They were married on January 10, 1942 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. The couple lived in the Harper community most of their lives where Maxine worked as a clerk and postmaster at the Harper Post Office, retiring in 1984. The couple moved to Lake Ponderosa near Montezuma for 12 years before moving to Sigourney in 2002. Maxine was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society until transferring her membership to St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney in 2002. She was also a member of the National Postmasters Union. Maxine enjoyed fishing, crocheting, ceramics, crossword puzzles, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her husband: Herb Hammes of Sigourney; three daughters: Shirley Jensen and husband Bill of West Branch, Denni Brown and husband Jeff of Harper and Debra Adam and husband Richard of Blair, Nebraska; two sons: James Hammes and wife Mary Beth of Sigourney and David Hammes and wife Catherine of Holly, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; two brothers: Robert Miller and wife Jenny of Cedar Rapids and Denny Miller and wife Doris of Arvada, Colorado; one sister: Betty Meier of Yuma, Arizona and a sister-in-law: Jo Anne Miller of Harper. She was preceded in death by her parents; son: Randall Joseph Hammes and brother: Milo Miller. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries - St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 12, 2007, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where there will be a combined rosary and prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Keokuk County, St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney or St. Elizabeth Cemetery. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
