Max Eugene Lewis was born April 25, 1930 in Kansas City, Missouri the son of Franklin and Margaret (Zihlman) Lewis. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1948, and from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines in 1954. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1948 - 1951. On September 6, 1953 he was united in marriage to Doris Knutson in Story City, Iowa. He owned and operated Lewis Department and Variety store in Wellman, Carsons Clothing in North English and Max Lewis Sanitation. He later worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. He served on the Washington County School Board, Mid-Prairie School Board, a founding member of the Kirkwood Community College Board, Wellman City Council, and served as the Mayor of Wellman. Max enjoyed hunting, collecting antiques, and reading. Max died on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 81 years. Max is survived by his wife Doris of Wellman; four children - Keith Eugene Lewis and wife Patrice of Marona, AZ; Robin Ann Seymour of Loveland, CO; Terri Lynne Kay of Tucson, AZ; Barbara Jean Dougherty and husband Jim of Norwalk; and ten grandchildren - Jennie Seymour August and husband Jesse; Kalyn Seymour, Nicholas Lewis, Noelle Lewis, Julian Kay, Chloe Kay, James Dougherty, Bradley Dougherty, Thomas Dougherty, and Olivia Dougherty. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Paul Franklin Lewis. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011 at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Wellman. Rev. Rich Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman Cemetery. There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church Scholarship fund. The Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman is in charge of the arrangements.
