SIGOURNEY-Max C. Liggett, age 77, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, September 13, 2005, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ottumwa, following a lengthy illness. Max was born September 20, 1927, in Albia, Iowa, to Herman and Winnie (Evans) Liggett. He attended country school and graduated from Albia High School and Simpson College, where he played four sports. Max taught American History, World History and Social Studies and coached football, basketball, track, tennis, golf and baseball at Orient, Reinbeck, where he coached the girls' state basketball championship team in 1952, Denison and Des Plaines, Illinois. He married JoAnn Hunter. She preceded him in death. On October 6, 1990, he married Joyce Jaacks in Mt. Carroll, Illinois. Max and Joyce made their home in Sigourney following their marriage. He is on the Wall of Fame at Simpson College and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Des Plaines, Illinois, the Elks Lodge, Retired Teachers of Illinois, Sigourney Country Club and the Cedar Creek Golf League. Max enjoyed golfing, attending high school and college football games, watching basketball, baseball and the History Channel, working outside, traveling, fishing and walking on the beach in Florida. Survivors include his wife: Joyce Liggett of Sigourney; six children: Jerry and wife Diane of Las Vegas, Nevada, Jack and wife Michele of Des Plaines, Illinois, Jeff and wife Kristi of Houston, Texas, Jay and wife Claire of Sammomish, Washington, Jennifer Winters of Illinois and Jodi Ochotnicki and husband Dean of Huntley, Illinois; three step children: Jon Jaacks and wife Pat of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jill Barnhart and husband Phil of Portland, Oregon and Jay Jaacks and wife Melissa of Portland, Oregon; 12 grandchildren and two step grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife: JoAnn and brother: Phillip Liggett. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church, with Rev. John Hembry officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 20, 2005, at the church. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
