Marye Sourwine

Marye Sourwine, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died at 11:56 p.m., on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at her home. Visitation will begin after 12 noon on Friday, July 2nd, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel of Mt. Pleasant, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 3rd, at Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Hess officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Calvary Baptist Church, Hospice of Central Iowa, and Salem Crew Public Library. On-line condolences may be left at www.olsonpowell.com. Born January 18, 1921, in Henry County, Marye Eleanor was the daughter of William Walker and Grace Marie Moxley Montgomery. She was a 1938 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. She married Melvin C. Smith on January 18, 1939, in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death in August of 1977. After living northeast of Salem for much of her life, Marye moved to Mt. Pleasant in 1979. On June 12, 1983, she married Phillip G. Sourwine in Salem, IA. He preceded her in death in May of 1993. Marye was a farmwife, mother, and grandmother. She was employed as a cashier for the R.M. Harrison Dime Store in Mt. Pleasant for 28 years. An active member at the Calvary Baptist Church, Marye participated in the widow's group and Bible study. She belonged to the Salem American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling in leagues in Mt. Pleasant and Burlington. Marye liked to play Bridge, and belonged to various Bridge groups, along with a Pinochle Club. She was fond of gardening, crocheting, sewing, crafting, and rubber stamping to make her own cards. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Shaffner of West Burlington, IA, and six grandchildren, Nancy (Mick) Sones of Fridley, MN, Carmen Shaffner of Richmond, VA, John F. Shaffner Jr. of Salem, IA, Bradley (Tracy) Hudson of Farmington, IA, and Timothy and Corey Smith, both of Ft. Madison, IA. She is also survived by seven great grandchildren, Elton Shaffner, Brandon and Hanna Hudson, Kyler, Julia, and Landon Smith, and Taylor Young, along with a special cousin, Wilma Wilson, brother-in-law, Harold Beery, and several nieces and nephews. Along with her parents and husbands, Marye was preceded in death by a son, John Dale Smith, one brother, Hoyt Montgomery, and one sister, Martha E. Beery.
