Mary A. Smith, 83, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Friday, September 07, 2007, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant. Visitation will begin after 12:00 noon on Tuesday, September 11, 2007, at the Olson - Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., September 12, 2007, at the Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Jeff Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Jaggar Cemetery. Memorials have been established to the Calvary Baptist Church, Shepherd Community and the Evangelical Mission Ministries. Born March 8, 1924, in Des Moines County, IA, Mary Alice was the daughter of Herman A. and Geneva F. Kellar Prehm. She grew up in the Middletown and Danville area, and graduated from Danville High School. She attended Business College in Burlington. On September 18, 1943, she married Winfred Siems in Danville, IA. He preceded her in death on July 25, 1988. On December 28, 1991, she married Lester H. Smith. Mary worked at the Danville State Savings Bank in Danville for twenty-five years, retiring in 1983. She was a member of the Danville Baptist Church and later became a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. She taught Sunday School for many years and was involved with the ladies organizations of the church. Mary worked diligently on her needlepoint projects. She was a longtime member of the Ten Club in Danville. She enjoyed being with her family and especially enjoyed the times spent with her grandchildren. Mary is survived by her husband, Lester of Mt. Pleasant, IA; one daughter, Judy (Jim) Gerdes of Ft. Madsion, IA; one son, Dick (Barb) Siems of Murrieta, CA; one step-daughter, Penny (Brian) Barels Columbus, NE; two step-sons, Dan (Jan) Smith of New Freeport, PA, and Dave (Pat) Smith of Lesuer, MN; four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Dorothy Gerdner of Oakville, IA, Lura Anderson of New London, IA, and Lucille McCabe of New London, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Winfred Siems, and by an infant sister.
