Washington- Mary Roberts, of Washington and formerly of West Chester and Keota, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the age of 103 years and 28 days. She has been a resident at McCreedy Home in Washington since April of 2001. Mary Modenia Roberts was born on Sunday, May 30, 1909, near Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Edward Francis and Laura E. (Denison) Wade. She was baptized in the Wellman Methodist Church. She attended Eagleville Country School, NW of Wellman. On August 23, 1930, she married Elvin John Roberts at the Pastor's home in Washington. To this union were born 3 children: Melvin Duane, Carl Eugene and Mary Margaret. Elvin and Mary farmed in Parnell, Wellman and Keota areas, and lived for a time in Ellenton, Florida, before moving to West Chester. She had also been employed for some years in housekeeping services at the University of Iowa. Mary was a member of the Keota 76 Community Club and the West Chester Home Arts Club. Mary was a most loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother. She was a dedicated gardener and canned thousands of quarts of vegetables to provide for her family. She and Elvin enjoyed travel and crocheting was a hobby she pursued until recent years. She is survived by her 2 children: Melvin (Merleta) Roberts of Deep River and Mary Margaret (James) Bowers of Dekalb, IL; a daughter-in-law Rollene Roberts of Washington; 13 grandchildren;28 great grandchildren and 14 great great grandchildren; a sister: Opel (Ralph) Glider of Cedar Rapids; and the entire staff of McCreedy Home. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Elvin on November 27, 1990; a son Carl Roberts on November 28, 1990; a brother Charlie Wade and 2 sisters: Sadie Roberts and Edna Crossett. Celebration of Life Service will be held 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 30, 2012, at the Powell Funeral Home, Keota. Rev. James Stiles will officiate. Burial will be in the West Chester Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday, from 9-10 AM at the Powell Funeral Home, Keota. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the McCreedy Home and Iowa City Hospice.
