Mary Kathryn Hochstetler

March 18, 1936 — February 2, 2015

Mary Kathryn Hochstetler was born March 18, 1936 the daughter of Emanuel and Magdelina (Miller) Swartzendruber. On May 3, 1955 she was united in marriage to Franklin L. Hochstetler at the East Union Mennonite Church. They lived in rural Frytown until moving to Kalona in 1970. Mary worked for Shellar Globe, Thomas and Betts and ACT. She was a member of the East Union Mennonite Church where she was active with Women's Sewing. She also was a charter member of the Kalona Lioness Club. She enjoyed quilting and playing games with family. Mary died on Monday, February 2, 2015 at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona at the age of 78 years.
Mary is survived by her husband Franklin of Kalona; a son James A. Hochstetler of Kalona; two daughters: Trish (Steve) Billups of South Sioux City, Nebraska; Lori Hochstetler of Kalona; three grandchildren: Heather (Stephen) Dunn of Des Moines; Eric Billups of Minnetonka, MN; Dustin Billups of Toledo, OH; four sisters: Jane Gingerich of Riverside; Gladys Mast of Jefferson, OR; Dorothy Krebs of Washington; Carol Campion of West Branch; and three brothers: Robert Swartzendruber of Iowa City; Richard Swartzendruber of Reno, NV; and Glenn Dale Swartzendruber of Bettendorf. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Kathy Jo; two brothers: Harold and Ronald Swartzendruber; and two brothers-in-law Mahlon Joe Gingerich and Billy Campion.


Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, February 5, 2015 at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. Pastor Firman Gingerich will officiate. Burial will be in the East Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3-7 PM on Wednesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for East Union Mennonite Church and Iowa City Hospice.
