KEOTA-Mary J. Berg, age 89, of Keota, passed away Saturday, December 9, 2006, at Maplewood Manor in Keota, of declining health, with her family by her side. Mary was born July 19, 1917, in Harper, to John and Margaret (Sieren) Merz. On February 1, 1938 she married Leander Berg. Her life was devoted to her husband and seven children. She was a great cook and homemaker. In her pastimes, she enjoyed reading, playing cards and dancing. Her sense of humor will always be remembered. Survivors include her husband: Leander of Keota; seven children: Mary Ellen and husband Max Vail of Des Moines, Michael and wife Kathleen Berg of Harper, Peg and husband Bill Bruty of Rockledge, Florida, Kathy and husband Dave Peden of West Branch, Daniel and wife Jeanne Berg of Iowa City, Roger Berg of Harper and Alan and wife Judy Berg of Sigourney; 19 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and one brother: Dan and wife Evonne Merz of Harper. She was preceded in death by her parents; six siblings; grandson: Nicholas Berg and great grandson: Nolan Bruty. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2006, at the Holy Trinity Parish-St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemeteries-St. Elizabeth Catholic Cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 12, 2006, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a combined rosary and prayer service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the American Cancer Society and Keota Q.R.S.
