Mary Ellen Schmidt

Mary Ellen Schmidt, age 69, of Coralville, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2023, at Windmill Manor, Coralville. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in the Marengo Cemetery, Marengo, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be contributed to the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. Kloster Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mary Ellen is survived by a brother Richard “Smitty” Schmidt, III, of Marengo; a niece Amber; and good friend Theresa Tometich. She is preceded in death by her parents.

Mary Ellen was born February 14, 1953, in Iowa City, the daughter of Richard J., II and Wilma M. Plagmann. She graduated from Marengo High School in 1971. Mary Ellen continued her education at Ellsworth Community College, in Iowa Falls, receiving her associates degree, and at Emporia Teachers College, graduating with her teachers degree in 1975. She was employed as a correctional officer for 35 plus years at the Iowa Medical Classification Center, in North Liberty.

Mary Ellen liked to travel when she was able. She loved Iowa Hawkeye sports and was an avid supporter. She regularly attended football games, and men’s and women’s basketball games. Mary Ellen especially loved her cats and enjoyed spending time with them.
