Mary Ellen Bauer, age 93, died following a long illness at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the North English Christian Church in North English. Pastor Don Ridenour will officiate. Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Tuesday, December 7, 2004, from 5 PM until 8 PM. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church and the North English Community Center. Messages and Tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. Mary Ellen Bauer was born on September 23, 1911 on a farm east of Keswick, IA, a daughter of Isaac & Lillian M. Wright Bair. Her mother died during a flu epidemic in 1918 and she was raised by her father and stepmother, Ethel Fitzwater Bair. Ellen graduated from Keswick High School and was united in marriage to Wendell Bauer on Nov. 28th, 1932. They farmed near North English until Wendell's death on July 25, 1953. Shortly thereafter Ellen moved into North English. She was a member of the Christian Church in North English for over 50 years. She worked many years in the North English School Cafeteria. When she retired, she started to quilt at the North English Community Center. She made quilts for family and friends. Her other hobbies include reading, gardening, and traveling. Ellen is survived by a son, Carroll Bauer and wife Maurita of North English, a daughter, Norma (Bauer) Jensen and husband, Ken of Cedar Rapids, five grandchildren: Randy Bauer and wife Julie of Walford, Kevin Bauer and wife, Carole of Des Moines, Dan Bauer of Millidgeville, Georgia, Valerie Jensen Pratt and husband, Bob of Germantown, Maryland and Blayne Jensen of Cedar Rapids and nine great grandchildren; Also surviving are a sister, Gladys Spence of Broomfield, Colorado, two half sisters, Loretta Shaull and husband, Milford of Keswick, Evelyn Claypool and husband, Jack of Mountain Home, Arkansas, one sister-in-law, Lorena Bair of Keswick and many nieces and nephews. Ellen was proceeded in death by her parents, husband Wendell, six brothers; Kenneth, Ward, Bruce, Clifford, Melvin (Tubby), Fleming (Al), and one stepbrother, Glen Fitzwater and one great grandson, Bradley Austin Bauer.
