Mary E. King, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Tuesday, July 07, 2015, at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield, IA.Visitation will be held from 12:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. that evening. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, July 10th at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Deborah Stowers officiating. Interment will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established to First United Methodist Church. On line condolences may be directed to www.olsonpowell.com Born August 12, 1926, in Cudworth, Saskatchewan, Canada, Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Walter and Verna Harnagel Schmidt. When Mary was in high school she moved to the Donnellson, IA area. She was a 1945 graduate of Donnellson High School and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College with a degree in Medical Technology. On September 8, 1950, she married Robert King in Mt. Pleasant. He preceded her in death on December 30, 2006. For many years Mary worked for Dr. William Megorden in Mt. Pleasant. She was instrumental in starting a medical lab tech program at Southeastern Community College and served as an instructor for that program. Before retiring she worked at the Mental Health Institute in Mt. Pleasant. Mary was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener specializing in vegetables and in later years focusing on flowers in her yard. She was a member of Women's Club, enjoyed playing Bridge and golfing at the Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club. Mary loved spending time with family, especially her grandsons whom she taught to golf. Survivors include a son, Thomas (Jody) King of Manchester, IA; two grandsons, Nathan King and Ryan King, both of Manchester, IA; and a brother Lester Schmidt of Cardston, Alberta, Canada. Along with her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by three sisters, Irene Wiexel, Violet Hauber, and Thelma Overton and one brother John Schmidt.
