Williamsburg- Mary Catherine (Katie) Van Steenhuyse was born January 31, 1927 in Williamsburg, Iowa. The daughter of Dr. Paul H. And Alice Bernadine (Coady) Giblin. She graduated from Williamsburg High School and received her B.A. from Clarke College at Dubuque in 1948 with a major in English. Katie taught school at Vinton and Toledo from 1948-1951 and was a substitute teacher in Williamsburg. Katie was united in marriage to Gerald G. Van Steenhuyse on June 11, 1951 in Williamsburg. She enjoyed golfing, reading, playing bridge, watching the Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball, Cubs baseball and watching her grandchildren in sports. Katie was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, church Trustee and the VFW and American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Katie passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 87 years.
She is survived by six children: James (Peg) Van Steenhuyse of Scottsdale, AZ, Janice (Michael) Malloy of Williamsburg, Susan (Andrew) Anello of Orland Park, IL, John (Donna) Van Steenhuyse of Grayslake, IL, Larry (Leanne) Van Steenhuyse of Danville, CA and Paul (Taffney) Van Steenhuyse of Edina, MN; 13 grandchildren: Kelly Van Steenhuyse, Matt (Mayra) Doehrmann, Ryan (Amy) Doehrmann, Ross Doehrmann, Chris (Lori) Anello, Nick (Debbie) Anello, Michael Anello, Scotty Van Steenhuyse, Robby Van Steenhuyse, Erin Van Steenhuyse, Alex Van Steenhuyse, Holly (Zach) Tobin and Felicia Van Steenhuyse; 9 great grandchildren: Lillie, Noah, Viviana, Gavin, Madox, Layla, Cora, Aubrey and Rylan; a brother: Greg Giblin of Des Moines and a sister: Ruth Ploen of Denver, CO. Katie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law: Gene Doehrmann and a brother: Paul Giblin.
Funeral Mass will be1:00 pm Saturday, October 25, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Fr. Joseph Roost will preside. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for St. Mary's Cemetery Fund or St. Mary's Catholic Church. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
