Mary Alice Carter, age 90, of West Des Moines and formerly of North English died on Saturday, August 31, 2013 in Waukee following a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English, with Pastor Luke Caster officiating. Visitation will be from noon until service timon Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the North English Library or Dollars for Scholars. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries. Mary Alice Carter was born on February 7, 1923, in North English, Iowa, the daughter of Edward G. and Addie S. Butler Harber. She lived most of her life in North English. After graduating from North English High School she attended Parson's College in Fairfield. She was united in marriage to Arthur B. Carter on December 24, 1941, in Kirksville, Missouri. Mary Alice worked eight years at Farmers Savings Bank and 28 years as the Board Secretary and Business Manager for English Valleys Schools. She was a member of the North English Christian Church, a charter member of the VFW Auxiliary, the Fortnightly Club and was a volunteer at the North English Library. She moved to West Des Moines in September 2001 and lived in the Lodge at Ashworth for 12 years. Mary Alice is survived by a daughter, Peg L. Bell and husband Larry of West Des Moines, Iowa and son Thomas E. Carter and wife Jane of Bettendorf, Iowa; five grandchildren: Curtis Bell, Jason Bell, Carrie Smith, Elizabeth Carter and Andrew Carter; eight great grandchildren: Katie, Ian, Addie and Jamie Smith, Nate and Jay Bell and Ted and Charlie Bell. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arthur in July 1999 and a son John Arthur Carter
