PARNELL - Marvin J. Miller was born February 25, 1927 in rural Parnell, Iowa, the son of Joel J and Barbara (Swartzendruber) Miller. He attended Parnell High School and graduated from the Hesston Academy in Hesston, Kansas. On December 31, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ellen Pearl Bachman in Manson, Iowa. Marvin lived in rural Parnell all of his life where he farmed with his brother-in-law Delmar Bender and raised livestock. After retirement he sold pumpkins and became known for Miller Sweet Corn. He was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church, Iowa County Cattlemen's Association, Iowa County Pork Producers, and past President of Wellman Telephone Company. Marvin died on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 87 years.
Marvin is survived by three children, George (Carmel) Miller of Washington, Frank (Brenda) Miller of Oxford, Sherlyn (Craig) Jantzi of Albuquerque, New Mexico, 9 grandchildren, 5 step grandchildren;15 great grandchildren, and his dear friend Anna Marie Sleeth. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ellen, a daughter-in-law Elizabeth Miller, and a sister Goldie Bender.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell with Pastor Corey Miller and Pastor Martha Yoder officiating. Burial will be in the West Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2-8 PM on Tuesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family will greet friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for West Union Mennonite Church.
