OTTUMWA-Martin Louis Schroeder, age 88, of Ottumwa, died Monday, July 12, 2004, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ottumwa, following a lengthy illness. Martin was born January 17, 1916, at Wellman, Iowa, to Louis and Otalie (Ziehlke) Schroeder and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1933. He joined his father in the restaurant and bakery business after the death of his mother in 1936. His father died in 1937. Martin married Eunice Marie Arp on January 24, 1938, at the Methodist Parsonage in York, Missouri. He joined the Navy in April 1945 and served aboard the L S M 357 in the South Pacific. Following his discharge, the couple moved to Sigourney where Martin and Art Prall formed a partnership in the S & S Shoe Company. Martin retired in 1978 and the couple moved to Bentonville, Arkansas. In April of 1994 they moved to Ottumwa. Martin is a past member of the United Methodist Chuches in Williamsburg and Sigourney and is presently a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Ottumwa. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Williamsburg and the Williamsburg volunteer fire department. He also served on the Sigourney city council. Survivors include his wife: Eunice of Ottumwa; two children: Janice Crissman of Ottumwa and Larry Schroeder and wife Marilyn of Sigourney; three grandsons: Randy Schroeder and wife Jody of Keswick, Terry Schroeder and wife Missy of Sigourney and Mark Crissman and wife Tammy of Minneapolis, Minnesota and eight grandchildren: Ashley, Andrew, Brooke and Allison Schroeder and Kathleen, Mirinda, Laura and Grace Crissman. He was preceded in death by his parents and one grandson: Bruce Allen Schroeder. Memorial services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. James Stout officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the funeral chapel. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds-Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.
