Marjorie Hester Phillips was born on November 7, 1935 in Ottumwa, IA, the daughter of Adriaan and Henrietta Den Hartog Van Halm. She grew up in the Eddyville area and graduated from Eddyville High School. She was employed at the Big Smith Overall Factory in Oskaloosa in the late 1950's. On July 1, 1960, Marjorie married James Phillips at the Reformed Church in Eddyville. They moved to North English in 1962. Marjorie has worked in food service for English Valleys Schools in North English since 1992. She was a member of the North English United Methodist Church and the UMW. Marjorie died on Friday, September 17, 2010, at the English Valley Care Center in North English. She lived 74 years, 10 months and 10 days. She is survived by her husband James of North English; 4 sons: Leonard (Sandra) Phillips of North English; Oren (Lori) Phillips of Pella; Steve (Michele) Phillips of Riverside; Matthew Phillips of North English; 6 granddaughters; a grandson; a brother Adrian Van Halm of Eddyville; and several nieces and nephews.. Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents a brother Tunis Van Halm and a beloved sister-in-law Barbara Van Halm. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at the English Valleys High School, in North English, with Pastor Michelle Williamson officiating. Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm on Monday, September 20, 2010 at the United Methodist Church in North English. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the United Methodist Church or Iowa City Hospice.. Memorials and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com under obituaries.
