North English- Marilyn Pearl Van Fleet was born March 17, 1928 in Keota, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd Everette & Pearl Edna (Brock) Baumert. She grew up in Keota where she started her career in the grocery business as a teen, working three years at Hulse's Store until graduating from Keota High School. On December 14, 1947 Marilyn was united in marriage to the love of her life, Charles Keith Van Fleet in Keota. They moved to North English and Marilyn began working for the Eldon Beorkrems. Although the store was sold twice during her employment there, she stayed with it, ending her career at Bucky's IGA, working for Bob Buckner. She has worked 46 years in the grocery business.
Marilyn was a member of the North English Christian Church, the Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hats. She enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, flower gardening, crafts and going to the casinos. She lived for her family. Marilyn passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha at the age of 90 years.
She is survived by her children: Carolyn (Bill) Toomer of Marion, Everette (Jean) Van Fleet of Geneseo, IL and Jerilyn (Les) Lehs of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren: Cassie (Brian) Dohmen, Andy (Katie) Toomer, Alyssa (Jose) Alcantar, Taylor (Hailey) Nace and Elliott (Jen) Van Fleet; five great grandchildren and a sixth waiting to be born; two sisters Margaret Burk of Bucklin, Missouri and Loretta Streigle of Sigourney; and three brothers Dennis Baumert of Keota, Larry Baumert of Marion and Gene Baumert of Keota. She was preceded by her parents, husband Charles in 2000, and nine siblings Dorothy Dorsey, Donald Baumert, Howard Baumert, Harry Baumert, Darlene Streets, Duane Baumert, Norma Baumert, Glen Baumert, and Paul Baumert.
Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at the Powell Funeral Home, North English. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery. Visitation will be on Saturday from 9:00 am until service time. Memorials are for the North English QRS.
