KEOTA-Marie Peiffer, age 90, of Keota, died Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a brief illness. Marie was born June 4, 1916, in Northwood, Iowa, to Joseph and Charity (Morrow) Hartnell. She grew up in the Richland community and graduated from Richland High School and Parsons College. Marie taught rural school for four years before moving to Van Nuys, California, where she taught for six years in a private school. On July 1, 1939, she married Omer N. Peiffer in Van Nuys. The couple moved to the Marion, Iowa area where they owned and operated Peiffer's Jewelry Stores in Marion and Cedar Rapids for about 25 years, retiring in 1976. Marie moved to Keota in 1983. She was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Valley, Iowa and volunteered at the St. Luke's Hospital gift shop. Marie always enjoyed helping other people. Survivors include one brother: Tommy Hartnell of Richland; sister-in-law: Helen Tinnes of Keota; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Omer in 1973; son: Tommy Peiffer and one brother: Doyle Hartnell. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 8, 2006, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz and Jason Nicholls officiating. Burial will be at Friends Cemetery in Richland. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7, 2006, at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice or the Wilson Memorial Library. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements. The family wishes to give special thanks to Washington County Hospital and Mercy Hospital Iowa City to doctors, nurses and staff for their loving care of Marie.
