SIGOURNEY-Marian L. Downing, age 84, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. Marian was born December 20, 1925, in West Union, Iowa, the daughter of John and Viola (Light) Steffens. She graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1947. On August 22, 1948, she was united in marriage to Craig Downing, in West Union, Iowa. For 18 years she taught high school business education courses in Randalia, Luana, Forest City and Sigourney. She was active in the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association for 19 years and served as co-president with Craig for two years. She was also the newsletter editor for 15 years. She was a member of and organist for Hope Lutheran Church for many years and was involved with AARP for 20 years. Survivors include her husband Craig of Sigourney; their children Cindy (Bruce) Campbell of Thorp, WI, Jane (Danny) Fetters of Beacon, IA and Joni (Steve) Benz of Gardner, KS; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a sister Erma Johnson of Oskaloosa; several cousins and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law Earl Johnson. Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at the Hope Lutheran Church in Sigourney, with Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be in West Union at a later date. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa Retired School Personnel Association. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Sigourney is caring for Marian and her family.
